Dear Professor Tang:

Your sister called me regarding your questions concerning the visa for your
son. I talked with Mr. Tom Fingar of the U.S.-China Relations Office here
at Stanford. He called the State Department in Washington D.C..
The usual U.S. policy is that if someone
is coming on a J-1 Visa, the J-2 Visa is automatically issued to dependents. If
a length of time is imposed, it is established after the person arrives (i.e., on
entry), and the State Department seemed to be surprised that there could be a
problem regarding time limit (e.g., 3 mos.), being established before arrival.

I am sending a letter to John Thompson of the U.S. Embassy to see if he can
help straighten out the situation.

If there seem to be further problems, Tom Fingar said to please feel free to call
him. If there are further problems, please let me know and I will talk to him.

.sgn
